The Approach we take here at BSNBCS is one of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports or PBIS. This means that we spend a considerable amount of time getting to know our students and their families, so we can best identify their strengths in order to design appropriate supports and interventions to ensure each student can make the necessary academic progress and appropriate social emotional development every year.
All of our curriculum is Common Core Aligned in each grade. We used boxed curriculum and supplemental materials to meet the needs of our students. We leverage small group instruction using data collected daily, weekly, and over the course of unit studies. This way we are able to group our students according to their needs so they improve quickly. We combine targeted small group instruction, with the use of technology and project based learning. This way we are able to simulate the demands of the real world on their level.
We give quizzes, tests and exams regularly so that teachers, administrators and parents know how their children are progressing. We send out progress reports and report cards every quarter. We have parent teacher conferences to discuss progress and our administrative team and teachers are always available to meet at the parents’ request.
All core classes are co-taught, meaning there are at least two teachers in each class. This enables students to receive levels of support that fit their needs in all subject areas.
Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) matters. We believe that we cannot ONLY teach reading, math, science and social studies to our students and expect them to be successful. We must also support them with growing an awareness of how to treat others and themselves so that they can solve problems, have happy relationships with their peers and have a sense of self and confidence throughout their educational career at BSNBCS.
This is why we have a Student Support Team that specializes in all areas of social and emotional development from Kindergarten to 9th grade. SEL has now been added to the Next Generation Standards to create a new formula; Academics + Social & Emotional Learning = Success. All teachers and Coaches are stakeholders in student success! These specialists teach character education classes or advisory in the Middle School, monitor students behavior and facilitate incentive programs and much more. This way, students are motivated to learn and feel supported when they make mistakes.
Our approach works. The last round of state tests show that the way we teach our students is effective. By learning what they know and using it to make our students more capable and their skills more refined, we are able to push our students to achieve!
