Dear Parents and Guardians:

As you may be aware, the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) will be reviewing Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School’s charter renewal application starting in November. This is a process that all charter schools undergo at the end of their charter term. Typically the review process takes several months and serves as an opportunity for the school staff, board members, students, and parents to reflect on the school’s achievements as the NYC DOE considers renewing the school’s charter for up to another five years.

NYC DOE asks four questions when considering whether a charter school should be renewed: 1) Is the school an academic success? 2) Is the school effective and well run? 3) Is the school financially viable? Pursuant to New York State Charter School law, the DOE may deny the school’s renewal application if the school does not provide satisfactory answers to the four questions. Should this happen, the school would close at the conclusion of the current charter term.

As a valuable partner in the school’s success, we invite you to participate in the renewal process. There are two ways to get involved:

•   Attend a Public Hearing: In the next few weeks, Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School and the NYC DOE will hold a public hearing to gather comments and opinions of the school. Stay tuned for more information from your school leaders. All are welcome to attend and give their comments regarding the school’s renewal.
•   Send us your thoughts: E-mail us or call us and give us your opinion of Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School.
